Outline is an iPhone app that builds training and nutrition plans. It is operated by OutlineFit ltd Co., an Arizona limited liability company ("we", "us"). This policy explains what we collect, why, and the choices you have. Questions: support@outlinefit.com.
What we collect
- Account: your email address, used to sign you in. If you use Sign in with Apple, Apple tells us a private ID for your account and the email you choose to share (this can be an Apple relay address); we never see your Apple ID password.
- Profile and body data you enter: sex, birth year, height, weight, tape measurements (such as neck, waist and hips), estimated body fat, training experience, schedule, equipment, joints you want to protect, and your chosen goal.
- Logs you enter: workouts, food entries, weigh-ins and progress.
- Feedback you send: your message plus the app version, the screen you sent it from, and your phone's operating system.
- Crash and error reports: technical details about errors (device model, OS version, app version, the screen you were on) and an anonymous account ID. Crash reports do not include your email, measurements or logs.
- Apple Health (only if you connect it): we read your body weight, body fat percentage, step count, active calories, heart rate and workouts (for example runs, walks and rides recorded by Apple Watch or apps like Strava). We also read active calories (for example from Apple Watch) to show how much a workout burned. Weigh-ins and workouts are saved to your Outline account so they show in your progress and activity; step counts, active calories and heart rate are used on your phone to show steps and calories burned, and are not stored. Strength workouts aren't imported. You can hide any imported workout. We never write to Apple Health.
- Food descriptions you choose to estimate: if you use "Describe it" on the food screen, the text you type is sent to Anthropic (the maker of Claude) to estimate calories and protein, and the request and result are logged so we can check accuracy. Don't include personal details in food descriptions.
- Subscription status (Outline Pro): if you subscribe, Apple handles the payment. We never see your card or Apple ID details. We receive your purchase history for Outline (which plan, trial or renewal dates, whether it's active) linked to an anonymous account ID, so Pro works on any phone you sign in on.
- App usage events: a handful of milestones, such as finishing setup, logging your first workout or meal, and opening or starting Outline Pro, saved with your account ID and app version. They don't include what you ate, your measurements or your workouts. We use them to see where people get stuck, not for advertising.
- Barcodes you scan and food searches: the barcode number, or the words you type in food search, are looked up in Open Food Facts, a public food database. Nothing else about you is sent. The camera is used only to read the barcode; no images are saved.
We do not collect your location, contacts or photos. We do not use advertising trackers.
Test versions with learning features (optional): some test builds can also read sleep, resting heart rate, heart rate variability, breathing rate, VO2 max, resting calories, calories you logged in other apps and period days, only after you allow it. These are used on your phone to suggest how hard to train and to improve your calorie and strength estimates. If you turn on Help improve Outline, a daily summary of those numbers and the app's predictions is saved to your account so our models can learn across users. It is off by default, and turning it off deletes what you shared. Your workouts, food and weigh-ins are only used to train models across users while it is on.
Apple Health data is never used for advertising or marketing, never sold, and never shared with third parties except the database provider that stores your account on our behalf.
How we use it
- To calculate your body fat estimate, calorie and macro targets, and training plan.
- To save your progress and show it back to you.
- To fix bugs and improve the app, including reviewing feedback and crash reports. We may look at usage in aggregate (for example, how many people finish onboarding).
- To email you sign-in links and reply to support requests.
- To check whether your account has Outline Pro and unlock its features.
We do not sell your data, share it for advertising, or use it to make decisions about you outside the app.
Who processes it
We use a small number of service providers to run Outline. They process data only on our behalf:
- Supabase: database and sign-in (stores your account, profile and logs).
- Sentry: crash and error reporting.
- Resend: sends sign-in emails.
- Anthropic: estimates nutrition from food descriptions you choose to send (not used to train their models).
- Open Food Facts: public database used to look up scanned barcodes and food searches (receives only the barcode number or search words).
- RevenueCat: manages Outline Pro subscriptions (receives your anonymous account ID and your App Store purchase records for Outline, not your email or health data).
- Cloudflare: hosts this website and forwards support email.
- Apple: distributes the app, including TestFlight beta testing, processes subscription payments, and provides Sign in with Apple if you choose it, under Apple's own privacy policy.
Security
Data is encrypted in transit. Each account can only read and change its own records, enforced by access rules in our database. No system is perfectly secure, but we limit what we collect and who can access it.
Keeping and deleting your data
We keep your data while your account exists. Delete your account anytime in You → Delete account, which permanently removes your profile, measurements, plans, logs, usage events and feedback from our database, and, if you signed in with Apple, revokes Outline's access to your Apple sign-in. Crash reports are kept by Sentry for up to 90 days. Deleting your account does not cancel an Outline Pro subscription; cancel it in your iPhone's Settings first. Apple and RevenueCat keep purchase records as required for billing and tax. You can also email us to access, correct or delete your data.
Age
Outline is for people 18 and older. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 18. If you believe a minor has created an account, contact us and we'll delete it.
Not medical advice
Outline provides general fitness information. It is not a medical device and does not diagnose, treat or prevent any condition.
Changes
See also our Terms of Use. If we change this policy, we'll update the date above and, for significant changes, tell you in the app.
